Однако большим недостатком этих антибиотиков является развитие бактериальной устойчивости. Число штаммов, устойчивых к бета-лактамным антибиотикам, растет, особенно в последнее время, вследствие широкого и часто необоснованного применения антибиотиков. Чаще всего, причиной устойчивости является энзиматическая деструкция антибиотиков посредством бета-лактамаз, которые гидролизуют бета-лактамное кольцо пенициллина.
